Islamabad—Speakers and experts at an international conference on Monday termed Sunday’s inauguration of Gwadar port by Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif opening of a new era not only for regional trade, industry and infrastructure and energy but also for the decade-long friendship between Pakistan and China. The international conference was titled “CPEC, OBOR and Beyond” and its opening session was addressed by Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of China Zhao Lijian, Head of China Study Center Syed Tanveer Abbas Jafri and Director Pakistan Centre for Culture & Communication Tsinghua University Beijing Mr Li Xiguang. In his address, Mr Zhao Lijian said CPEC is the flagship project that goes in line with the Chinese President Xi Jinping’s vision of One-Belt One-Road (OBOR). It aims at giving unprecedented boost to Pakistan’s economy. It also provides China with a new trade route to the Asian countries and beyond, Africa, Middle East and even Europe. “This is an unprecedented initiative and a win-win situation for the countries of the region,” said Mr Zhao Lijian. Giving an outline of the CPEC, Mr Zhao Lijian said China has given a new vision to the world with the initiation of the corridor and there are countless opportunities of investment, trade and development along this historic route. About Balochistan uplift as result of the CPEC, it may be remembered that such development projects as Balochistan falls Khuzdar-Basima Highway, Dera Ismail Khan-Quetta Highway, Hubco Coal Power Plant, Gwadar Power Plant, Gwadar-Nawabshah, Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal and Pipeline, Gwadar Eastbay Expressway, Gwadar New International Airport, Gwadar Eastbay Expressway and Fresh Water Supply scheme for Gwadar are included in the grand development package. Zhao Lijian made it clear that the western route of the CPEC is very much part of the corridor and like Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhw would also benefit a great deal from the project. We are planning to make more investment on the western part in the days to come, he said. In his keynote address, Mr Li Xigunag CPEC not only aimed at industrial and trade boost it would also have lasting impact on the two countries’ culture and civilization. CPEC links China to a new world through Pakistan. He reminded the audience of the days when China was isolated and it is Pakistan that acted as window opener for the country to the external world. History is repeating itself today, said Li Xigunag and today, Pakistan is somewhat isolated and it is China’s turn to bring the countries and investments in Pakistan.
